Medical Product Recall
Michigan and Co-Counsel Nationwide
In September 2003, the company Smith and Nephew issued a voluntary withdrawal of two of its knee replacements, the Oxinium Genesis II and the Profix II. These two prostheses were reportedly coming loose after doctors implanted the device. Smith and Nephew no longer manufacture these prostheses because of concerns for patient safety.
In March 2001, the company Sulzer issued a knee implant recall after receiving reports of “unanticipated adverse clinical outcomes.” These prostheses were made and implanted between July and December of 2000. Up to 2,000 patients may have received one of these defective implants.
Recently, the companies Johnson and Johnson and Depuy have been under review for their ultra high molecular weight polyethylene knee joint prostheses. Various reports indicate that these prostheses are defective in that they may fail prematurely after they have been sterilized with gamma radiation.
In December 2000, the company Sulzer issued a recall on its hip prostheses. According to Sulzer, during manufacturing a slippery, oily substance had been left on their products. This substance makes it impossible for the prosthesis to bond with the patient’s existing bone, resulting in the joint failing to work properly. This recall may involve as many as 20,000 patients who received a Sulzer-made prosthesis after 1997.
Signs that you may have a defective prosthesis:
- Pain at or near the joint
- Pain when standing
- Difficulty placing weight on the leg.
Although these companies suggest to those that have used their defective products to check in with a doctor, the fact of the matter is that many have to undergo either revision surgery or another joint replacement surgery.
