Hydrocephalus is made up of the Greek roots ‘hydro,’ meaning water, and ‘cephalus,’ meaning head. Hydrocephalus is sometimes referred to as water on the brain. The truth is everyone has a clear, watery fluid called cerebral spinal fluid, bathing our brain.
People with hydrocephalus have an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the cavities of their brain. This excess of CSF results in an increase in pressure inside the skull and eventually leads to enlargement of the head, convulsion, and mental retardation.
What causes hydrocephalus?
- Blockage of CSF outflow in the cavities or in the subarachnoid space over the brain
- Overproduction of CSF
- Congenital malformation
- Head injuries
- Bleeding in the brain
Hydrocephalus is one of the most common birth defects in the United States. Hydrocephalus is found in one out of every five hundred live births and is one of the leading causes of brain surgery in children in the United States.
Approximately 700,000 children and adults in the United States alone have suffered from hydrocephalus.
Of those with hydrocephalus, more than one quarter will develop epilepsy.
What are the symptoms of hydrocephalus?
- Infants and young children who have hydrocephalus tend to have abnormally large heads
How is hydrocephalus treated?
The most common treatment for hydrocephalus is the ventriculoperitoneal shunt, also known as the cerebral shunt. This is a tube that drains the extra fluid out of the brain down to the abdomen.
When is there a legal case?
Delayed diagnosis of hydrocephalus can lead to catastrophic injuries, including brain damage and death. We recovered over $1 million for a child whose preexisting brain damage was aggravated by RSD. We have also been successful in recovering over $500,000 for a child who developed hydrocephalus (without brain damage) as a result of a delayed diagnosis of meningitis. At GorenLaw, our hydrocephalus lawyers have successfully recovered money for individuals with hydrocephalus which went untreated long enough to cause permanent harm.
