RSD Awareness
Michigan and Co-Counsel Nationwide
Through programs for RSD awareness, people are educated about this potentially life-altering disease. It is important to remember that the cause of Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy varies with each patient, as do recovery levels. Children often recover from the condition more quickly than adults. Physical therapy in the early stages of the disease may help to limit symptom progression, but this has not been scientifically proven. In some cases, RSD leads to permanent physical changes, chronic pain and disability. Our RSD/CRPS attorneys have gained a valuable awareness of RSD and how it affects physical and mental well-being.
What Causes RSD?
The body sometimes responds to an injury with abnormal and amplified symptoms, such as excessive pain and inflammation. In determining what causes RSD, medical professionals may identify a disease trigger, such as:
- Broken bones, sprains and strains
- Burns, cuts and other tissue trauma
- Arm and leg immobilization, such as in casts
- Surgical and medical procedures
Oddly, these events might cause symptoms of RSD in one person but not in another – it is an individualized reaction to trauma. The body’s own immune system is responsible for the localized inflammation generated by RSD.
Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Causes
Peripheral nerve and blood vessel abnormalities are suspected to be causes of Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy symptoms. High levels of inflammatory chemicals have been identified in the tissues of sufferers. These chemicals may be responsible for the skin changes. After a limb is injured, its blood vessels may leak, which leads to swelling and skin redness. Or the vessels may tighten, causing paleness. When blood is flowing abnormally, surrounding tissue reacts negatively – one reason for RSD pain.
