Treatment of CRPS/RSD
CRPS/RSD is generally treated by a physiatrist or neurologist that specializes in neuromuscular disorders. Treatment is aimed to restore function and decrease symptoms. The following treatments maybe pursued to help patients:
- PT/OT-for restoring physical function of the affected limbs
- Medications like antidepressants, NSAID’s, steroids, gabapentin, pregablin-these medications help lessen anxiety, decrease nerve excitability and allow patients to effectively work on restoring function
- Osteoporosis medications like bisphosphonates to slow the progression of the bone destruction
- Anesthetic blocks, neurostimulators, sympathectomy all help to decrease nerve excitability and decrease pain sensations
- Other-psychotherapy, biofeedback, hypnosis, relaxation techniques to help patients manage the pain and anxiety
- Lastly, opioids. Narcotic pain medications generally do not help patients with CRPS/RSD.
