Nursing Home Negligence
Michigan and Co-Counsel Nationwide
Nursing Home Abuse Lawyer
A nursing home is designed to be a safe, caring environment for elderly and ill individuals who need assistance with daily living tasks. Nursing homes provide 24-hour services including rooms, meals, help with activities, and recreational programs. Most of all, nursing homes provide residents with the protection and care that family members and friends may not be available to offer. With the aging baby boomer population, nursing homes will be relied on more than ever in coming years. According to the U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee on Government Reform, there are currently nearly 17,000 nursing homes in the U.S. caring for 1.6 million residents – a figure expected to quadruple to 6.6 million residents by 2050.
What can happen at nursing homes?
Unfortunately, not all nursing homes follow appropriate and legal guidelines for resident care. Statistics show that nursing home abuse and neglect is a serious and significantly underreported problem. If you have been a victim of nursing home abuse, or if you suspect that a friend or family member may be a victim, it is vital that you seek the counsel of a qualified nursing home abuse lawyer.
Nursing home neglect cases generally involve serious injuries, such as broken bones caused by falling, infections caused by decubitis ulcers (bed sores), sexual abuse caused by poorly screened staff, and failure to make a timely request for medical attention causing premature death. The underlying issues of nursing home abuse often involve staff shortages, staff burnout, and inadequate training.

How can I find a quality nursing home?
Finding a facility you can trust to care for your loved ones can be difficult. According to the Foundation for Health in Aging, extensively researching potential nursing homes is key. Follow these tips, and always trust your instincts:
- Look it up: People with a computer and Internet access can find many websites that provide data on nursing homes. People without a computer can use one at their local public library or call 1-800-MEDICARE for information by mail.
- Get the inspection reports: Each state inspects nursing homes at least every 9 to 15 months. The reports are available to the public and contain information about any problems found. Contact your state department of aging or the National Citizens’ Coalition for Nursing Home Reform for more information.
- Visit repeatedly: Despite what you read about the nursing home, visiting the facility on more than one occasion is necessary. Medicare provides a checklist that family members can print out and take with them as they visit nursing homes.
Ask questions: Don’t assume anything, and clear up any concerns right away. When visiting a nursing home, it may also help to speak to nursing home residents and their relatives about the facility.
